Job Description
SUMMARY:
We are looking for a highly motivated & hardworking Yard Hostler to be a part of our logistics department team. Applicants for this position must be able to review the yard space, determine the vehicle placement and carefully move the vehicles to and from the loading docks at all our facilities.
Applicants are required to direct and supervise the movements of shipments, inspect the conditions of the vehicle before and after loading, take equipment to the shop for any maintenance issues prior to dispatch, and refuel vehicles when needed. Additionally, applicants may be required to clean the trailers prior to loading (if necessary) and must always adhere to safety standards.
Successful candidates are detail-oriented, able to meet the physical demands of this position, and are familiar with operating heavy trailers. Furthermore, applicants must be available to work flexible hours and in extreme weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Operate equipment using safe and proper work techniques.
- Review and determine suitable trailer and outside carrier vehicle placements.
- Direct and supervise vehicle and trailer movements.
- Set trailer temperatures prior to placing trailer for loading.
- Monitor trailer temperatures.
- Facilitate trailer maintenance issues with Dispatch and the Shop.
- Monitors refer trailer settings and fuel level in the yard.
- Refuel vehicles as needed.
- Inspect vehicle conditions and notify Shop of any maintenance issues.
- Always adhere to safety standards.
- Cleaning and fueling hostler after every use.

- Must have and maintain a driving record meeting the standards of the company and the company insurance carrier.
- Must hold a valid Class A driver’s license
- Proven work experience as a Yard Hostler, or a similar position in the logistics department.
- Familiarity with operating yard vehicles and trailers.
- Complete knowledge of safety protocols and guidelines.
- Ability to meet physical requirements.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
- Attention to detail.
- Possess good time management and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work 12-hour shifts and flexible hours.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- High School education required.
- Class A CDL License
- Must have a clear driving record.

Physical Needs

- Physical ability to lift, unload, and carry 200 to 600 cases of product weighing up to 70lbs over curbs, up and down thresholds and through doorways.
- Able to enter and exit tractor and trailer in a safe manner by use of handholds and footholds up to 15 times per shift.
- Must be able to enter and exit trailer through side and rear doors at an elevation of approximately 4’ by use of bumper, handholds, and footholds, and or steps up to 15 times per shift.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver dock plate weighting up to 80lbs up to 6 times per shift.
- Physical ability to stand, sit and walk frequently.
- Physical ability to occasionally bend, kneel, crouch, climb and crawl.
- Exposure to a variety of environmental conditions: weather, temperature, lighting, and noise.
Compensation
$26/hour
